Aeropress

Aeropress

Whether you’re a seasoned coffee enthusiast or just starting your specialty coffee journey, the AeroPress is one of the most versatile and forgiving brewing tools available. Invented in 2005, this portable, fast, and easy-to-clean device uses air pressure to extract rich, full-bodied flavors with exceptionally low acidity and zero bitterness.

Here is our step-by-step guide to brewing the perfect cup at home using the classic Standard Method.

What You’ll Need

  • AeroPress (Chamber, Plunger, Filter Cap)

  • AeroPress Paper Filter

  • Freshly Roasted Coffee Beans: 15g (Medium-Fine grind, similar to table salt)

  • Hot Water: 220ml at ~92°C (198°F) - let boiled water sit for 30 seconds

  • Mug & Timer

Step-by-Step Instructions

1. Prep the Filter

Insert a paper filter into the black filter cap. Twist it onto the brewing chamber and place it securely over your favorite sturdy mug. Rinse the filter with a splash of hot water to eliminate paper taste and preheat your mug. Discard the rinse water.

2. Add the Coffee

Add 15g of medium-fine ground coffee into the chamber. Give it a gentle shake to level the bed of coffee grounds.

3. The Pour & Bloom

Start your timer. Pour 50ml of hot water over the grounds, ensuring all coffee is fully saturated. Let it bloom for 30 seconds. This releases trapped carbon dioxide and unlocks complex aromatic compounds.

4. Fill & Stir

Pour the remaining 170ml of hot water into the chamber (filling up to roughly the top of number 4). Stir gently with the stirrer for 10 seconds to ensure even extraction.

5. Plunge & Enjoy

Insert the plunger into the top of the chamber, creating a seal to retain heat. At 1 minute and 15 seconds, gently press the plunger down with steady, consistent wrist pressure. Stop pressing as soon as you hear a hissing sound—this prevents extracting harsh bitter oils.

Pro Tips for the Best Cup

  • Play with Grind Size: Want a heavier body? Grind slightly finer. Prefer bright, fruity notes? Try a slightly coarser grind.

  • Try the Inverted Method: If you want to steep your coffee longer without any early drip-through, assemble the AeroPress upside down before flipping and pressing!
